Heavily Meditated: A Free Community Meditation Experience
Guided by Maari Falsetto – Featuring Kirtan KriyaIn our fast-paced world, finding stillness can feel like a luxury. Heavily Meditated is a space where we slow down together — a free community gathering devoted to presence, breath, and the deep nourishment that comes from shared stillness. Each session invites us to return to ourselves while connecting with the collective energy of those around us.
For the last 3 years I have been guiding our community in the Kirtan Kriya, a timeless meditation practice from the Kundalini Yoga tradition. This powerful, multi-sensory meditation uses sound, movement, and focus to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit.
About Kirtan Kriya
Kirtan Kriya combines mantra (chanting), mudra (hand movements), and visualization to create a deeply integrative experience. The mantra Sa Ta Na Ma — meaning “Infinity, Life, Death, Rebirth” — represents the natural cycle of existence. As we chant aloud, whisper, and then move into silent repetition, the vibration of these sounds guides our awareness through the full spectrum of being. The accompanying finger movements (touching thumb to each fingertip) help balance both hemispheres of the brain and activate energy points connected to clarity and creativity. This combination of sound, movement, and mindfulness makes Kirtan Kriya one of the most studied and beneficial meditations available today.
Join Us
Heavily Meditated is open to all — whether you’re brand new to meditation or have a lifelong practice. Come as you are. Bring your breath, your curiosity, and your willingness to be part of something bigger than yourself.
Let’s sit together. Let’s be Heavily Meditated. The ticket link is:

The 15th annual Monster Dash is Saturday, October 24, at Lincoln Park, with the 5K at 9:30 a.m. and the Kids Monster Dash at 10:30 a.m. There will also be costumes, a Kids Zone, DJ, food and warm drinks, photos, and the usual crowd of current co-op families, alumni, and neighbors.
What makes Monster Dash especially significant this year is that it’s our biggest annual fundraiser, and it’s happening as the South Seattle College Cooperative Preschool community continues navigating the financial uncertainty created by the state funding-model changes.
In other words, the event itself is still the fun West Seattle Halloween tradition it has been for 15 years, but the fundraising carries considerably more weight this year.

The Stories We Carry – An Interactive Author Conversation & Writing Workshop with Margaret S. Barrie
Saturday, October 24, 2026
10:00 AM 11:30 AM
Women Hold the Key
9822 SW Gorsuch Road, VashonWhat stories live inside your family—and what happens when you start writing them down?
Women Hold the Key welcomes author Margaret S. Barrie to a thoughtful, interactive gathering exploring memory, family, community, nature, loss, and the stories that shape our lives.
Margaret is the author of Auntie M. Speaks, her debut book—a fictional historical memoir inspired by family history and the people, places, relationships, and experiences that shape who we are.
This gathering will be part author talk, part conversation, and part writing workshop.
Workshop theme: A childhood experience in nature.
Margaret will read selections from Auntie M. Speaks and take us behind the scenes of bringing a book to life—from research and family interviews to writing, editing, and transforming real memories and history into a work of fiction.
Then we’ll turn to our own stories.
Participants will be invited to write a short piece inspired by a memory, person, place, family story, or experience from their own lives. Those who wish will have an opportunity to share their writing with the group.
We’ll close with an open conversation with Margaret about the book, writing and editing, conducting interviews, researching the past, finding inspiration, and the courage it takes to put our stories on the page.
Please read Auntie M. Speaks before attending (you can find it on BookBaby or Amazon) so we can have a richer conversation about the book. Come with passages or moments you would especially like Margaret to discuss or read aloud.
No writing experience is necessary. Simply bring your curiosity, your questions.

On Saturday October 24, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Mediumship Demonstration in a Spiritual Speakeasy will be at the Sanctuary and studio at 3618 SW Alaska St., the door is located on the lower level on 37th Ave SW, look for the Inner Alchemy sign to the right of the door.
Step into an evening where the veil feels just a little thinner.
Join local psychic medium Marc Lainhart for a heartfelt Mediumship Demonstration in the Inner Alchemy Sanctuary & Studio — a space with a fascinating history of its own. Long before it became a sanctuary for healing and connection, this very room was the speakeasy of the historic West Seattle Veterans Hall. It seems only fitting that its next chapter continues to hold stories, mystery, and meaningful connection. For one evening, we’ll transform the Sanctuary into a spiritual speakeasy—a welcoming gathering where spirit, intuition, and the unseen are invited to the table. Through evidential mediumship, Marc will share messages, validations, and moments of connection from loved ones in spirit, offering comfort, hope, healing, and perhaps a few goosebumps along the way.
Whether you receive a message or simply witness the experience, mediumship has a beautiful way of reminding us that love continues, connection never truly ends, and we are part of something far greater than we can see.
Pull up a chair, open your heart, and join us for an unforgettable evening in West Seattle’s most soulful speakeasy.

Maiden to Mother: A Matrescence Mini Retreat
Saturday, October 24, 2026, 1-5 p.m.
Sacred Growing Space, 7358 35th Ave SWThe process of transitioning from woman, or “maiden,” to mother, what anthropologists call “matrescence,” can feel like a metamorphosis. Like adolescence, it is a time of huge physical shifts in your body and mind. It is a time of questioning yourself, and maybe even questioning everything.
This tender time can be emotionally, physically, and spiritually challenging. Just like it takes a village to raise a baby, it takes a village to honor and support a new mother through this transition. Yet sadly, in our Western culture where there are few villages, we are often left to cross this threshold alone.
Are you a mother who is juggling life with young kids?
Do you feel like you are just now coming up for air after the complex newborn months
Are you yearning to get reoriented to the woman you are now?
Do you want to connect with other mothers who understand firsthand?
Are you craving an afternoon that’s just for you?
Join us for a restorative and contemplative mini retreat honoring matrescence and the transformative power of stepping into motherhood. The afternoon will be spent in ritual and community and will include meditation, gentle movement, journaling and creative expression, sharing time, and restorative yoga.Together, we will begin to explore, honor, and process the changes we’ve experienced since becoming mothers. We will seek to hold space for one another’s stories and our unique reclaiming of the sacred in motherhood.
No yoga or meditation experience is required. Space is limited to ensure adequate time for sharing.

The Byrd Ensemble opens its 2026|27 Seattle series, Shadow & Splendor, with Spem in alium: Hope in Darkness on Sunday, October 25, at 3 pm at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle. The program centers on Thomas Tallis’s Spem in alium, performed with forty voices.
Tallis composed Spem in alium around 1570 for forty voices, divided into eight choirs of five. Over roughly ten minutes, the voices enter one by one and layer into a dense, stereophonic sound. It is one of the great works of the Renaissance, and it is rarely heard live because of the forces it requires. The rest of the program features motets by Tallis, William Byrd, and John Taverner, who shaped the sound of English sacred music through one of history’s most turbulent periods of religious change. Joined by Arvo Pärt’s Da pacem Domine, the program moves from grief to hope.
“Spem in alium is a piece you can’t fully experience until you’re there in person, surrounded by forty voices arranged in a horseshoe,” said Markdavin Obenza, artistic director of the Byrd Ensemble.
The Seattle performance follows the ensemble’s concert the day before, Saturday, October 24, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland.

• Recreation Hall at Alki United Church of Christ

• Free and open to the public; free-will donations gratefully accepted
• All ages are welcome; program especially geared for kids under fiveAlki UCC Open Gym was inspired by an email sent to the church this summer by a local parent who was struggling to find nearby places to take her one-year-old that were both free and indoors for rainy days. The collaboration between church and neighbor began, as we dreamed together about how to create a gathering and play space for community.
Our goal is to create a space in the community where parents and caregivers can bring their children to play safely all year round, no matter the weather. We hope you’ll join us!

Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.
Mondays: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at Mama Be Well Healing Studio
Thursdays: 10 am – 11:30 am, same location, starting 6/4/26$32/session. 4 sessions for $102 (use within 6 weeks). Discounts are available for those who could otherwise not afford to attend.
Organizer Chris was inspired by a group he encountered during an extended stay in Mexico, “a weekly intercambio, or exchange, where Mexicans wishing to learn English and immigrants and tourists wishing to learn Spanish could practice speaking in a casual atmosphere in a cafe.” Upon return, he formed one, and now it meets twice weekly:
We began meeting on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina about two months ago. Mission has truly made us feel at home and we regularly have between 5-15 attendees. One of our members started up a Monday night group upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing in White Center that is growing weekly. Other members have stepped up to be admins or to provide graphics.
We are a welcoming group wherever you are on your Spanish journey. Beginners get a chance to practice speaking with others. Intermediate speakers can learn with others. And more fluent speakers have enjoyed the chance to be able to speak Spanish with others. It has been impressive to see the patient good hearted people attending build a real sense of community.
We meet from 6:30-8:30 on Monday nights upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing at 9832 14th Ave SW in White Center. Farm Boy is closed that night, but you can bring in food from any place in White Center. The space is excellent for conversation.
We also meet from 6:30-8:30 on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina at 2325 California Ave SW. You order your food or drink at the bar and they will bring it up to you.
If you are interested in joining us, please come! The only structure involved is to try and speak as much Spanish as you can. No RSVP is necessary and it is okay to arrive late if you need to. Gracias a todos!

The Talked About Earthquake and Tsunami – How It
Will Affect Our Area and How to Prepare
Presented by Fauntleroy Community Association (FCA)Our presenter Mac Macdonald is an emergency response strategist
specializing in “What If” scenarios. He is a volunteer First Responder with
CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Teams) and is an active participant in Washington
State Emergency Preparedness. A long-time West Seattleite, he is a leadership trainer
and author of “Lighting Your Own Fuse – A Glossary of Mission, Vision, and Passion”.Imagine a predicted seismic 9.0 strength earthquake along the Cascadia
Subduction Zone, or one along the Seattle Fault Zone that runs directly
under downtown and West Seattle. In one case, we will have time to prepare for a tsunami. If the earthquake
occurs along the Seattle Fault Zone, the damage from the shaking and
accompanying tsunami will be immediate. In either case, damage will
occur hundreds of miles inland due to power outages and refugee impacts. Now stop imagining it because it IS going to happen. Will it be as severe as
predicted? Perhaps not, but we hope for the best and prepare for the worst!GET INFORMATION ABOUT What is it? Are we in the time window? How fast will the
first wave travel? How soon it will hit Seattle, specifically West Seattle, and at what
strength? Where is my evacuation route? What is high ground? What is and should be
in an emergency backpack? What to do with animals – how to care for them after an
earthquake? What if your loved ones are in different parts of the city? With phone
and cell towers down, how will you communicate? What about boaters? So many
questions! Come hear about what you can do to be prepared. It is an engaging slideshow presentation, and highly educational.
It is not scary, just “awarey”. The key is:
Don’t be scared, be aware. And don’t just be aware, be prepared.

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.
The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.
Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”
Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”
The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

To really make amends for the untold sufferings of their ancestors, with whose blood and toil our nation was built? To make amends for years, decades, centuries of economic, social, educational, medical, housing, legal and citizenship injustice, all still ongoing?
Have you wished you could be an ally in bringing about that reparative justice, but just didn’t know where to start?
Well, here’s a great place: Beginning on September 24, brought to you by Admiral Church, is this 8-session Zoom education and action series:
WA: REPARATIONS is a series of eight Thursday evening Zoom sessions from 6-7:00 pm. Each evening will be led by experts on this topic and will include personal testimony and interactive action planning, as well as education. Here are the subjects for these sessions:
Sep 24 Foundations: How the System was built; implications for WA State.
Oct 1 Bondage, de facto bondage, employment and work conditions.
Oct 8 Land: The promise, the reversal, the subsidy.
Oct 15 Housing in WA: Covenants, redlining and displacement. Oct 22 Health, medical exploitation and the health gap.
Oct 29 Citizenship: Schools, the ballot and the call.
Nov 5 Reparations and reparative justice on the way.
Nov 12 Wayfinding forward.
Leaders include Rev Elizabeth Gordon, Michael Gordon, Rev Craig Rennebohm and Rev Jermell Witherspoon.
The sessions are free, though registration is requested, to enable break-out planning. Please see the admiral.church website.
Two books can be read, at recommendation of the course leaders, as background: : “From Here to Equality” by William Darity; “Getting to Reparations” by Dorothy Brown. The books are not required, however, and you can still get a lot out of these sessions, even if you have not had time to read them yet.
