We don’t use gas anymore, but I thought that the gas company would be the logical place to go for estimates. Many years ago my mother’s house used gas for the stove. Because there were accidents in those days, my mom became so worried about it that she called the gas company and discontinued service. She used electric from then on, but worried about the gas meter that had been installed in the basement. In those days it was a common arrangement; the meter reader could see it through a basement window. After several calls the gas company removed the meter, leaving a stub of the pipe capped, but still in the wall of the basement. Many years after that, it was noticed that the grass at the corner of the house couldn’t be kept green. Mom convinced herself that it must be that gas pipe. She thought it must have developed a leak. The gas company reassured her that they had cut the gas at the street and it wasn’t possible that the old pipe could be leaking. She insisted and complained long enough that they sent someone out to check. Sure enough, they discovered that it was indeed a live pipe and it had been leaking slowly for several years, fortunatly under the lawn and only killing the grass. They did cut it at the street and there was no more worry. I used to kid my mom that she could have had free gas all of those years! Oh, by the way, the house was heated with coal then…later with oil as it is today…
I’d call the gas company.
