Wow Ken, that was so much fun to try….and guess what, as I was playing with your great directions, a Qwest truck pulled up outside the house. He came in the house and put a filter on the line coming in the house so the DSL signal ONLY went to one phone outlet, not all of them as this “dilutes” the signal. Not the easiest to then switch the modem to a diff. phone jack but we never do that and I could do it if I really had to as I watched him do it. Well, he did all of that and still very slow. He then directly tested the phone jack for speed and got super quick speed. He thought it was the wireless router so we directly plugged the modem into the computer and STILL very slow. Only thing left was the modem so he tried replacing it with a brand new one and voila, blazing fast! It was the modem…what I was asking the on the phone techs so many times to just dismissals. So, got a free new modem out of the deal and ironically they don’t make non-wireless integrated modems now so I got a wireless modem out of the deal. I can turn it off though and just use it as a modem and still use the cisco linkys router I bought….out of spite since I paid for it. Just so glad that this is all fixed and a new free modem with wireless which means I might look into making my extra Linksys into a bridge or another access point to extend the range of our network.
Just crazy that THIS time it was just the modem but still not sure what could have happened to have had the modem go bad when we didn’t change anything…hmmm, wonder how to use my second wireless to extend the range of my current network!?
