UPDATE: Pickup-truck fire on Beach Drive

9:55 AM: Thanks to Ted for the photo. The pickup truck in the photo had a fire on Beach Drive SW near Atlas Place about the same time as the larger SFD incident on SW Michigan, in the 8 am vicinity. Ted happened by while SFD was in cleanup mode and reports the damage appeared to be in the engine-compartment area. We’re following up with SFD.

2:23 PM: We received this summary from SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty: “At 7:42 a.m., dispatch received several calls reporting a car fire, with smoke and flames visible, in the 6300 block of Beach Dr. SW. Engine 32 responded and confirmed a working fire in a pickup truck. The fire was extinguished, and the crew remained on scene to monitor until 8:41 a.m. No cause has been identified. No injuries reported.”

UPDATE: Building fire in southeast West Seattle

7:55 AM: Seattle Fire has a big response on scene at a commercial building at 200 206 SW Michigan, a short distance east of the bottom of Highland Park Way hill. Updates to come. SFD says the fire’s on the second floor and “the incident is stable.”

8:02 AM: Here’s where this is. SFD says the fire is “in the duct system in the ceiling” and is under control.

8:21 AM: SFD says the fire is out and they’re working on ventilation, as well as investigation.

8:50 AM: No injuries reported; most units have been dismissed.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Suspected burglar found in bed

11:56 PM: A report summary released late tonight by Seattle Police details a burglary arrest southwest of Morgan Junction this afternoon. 911 first got the call around 2 pm about a man trying to enter a residence in the 7000 block of Fauntleroy Way SW. Somebody was home; the man couldn’t get in. Police say he “wandered further down the street” and got into an empty home by kicking the back door in. There, they say, he ate food he found in the kitchen and then went into a bedroom, where officers say they “located the suspect in the bed, under covers.” They arrested him and booked him into jail. We’ll check on his status in the morning.

ADDED 4:49 PM MONDAY: The 41-year-old suspect appeared in court this afternoon; prosecutors requested $50,000 bail and a judge set it at $25,000.

WEEK AHEAD: Morgan Community Association gathering brings another chance to see local candidates

As we’ve been reporting, your ballot for the general election includes two local races with an incumbent and challenger – King County Council District 8 and State House 34th District Position 2. We’ve covered them at the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce lunch and at the Alki Community Council meeting. This Wednesday, they’re expected at the Morgan Community Association quarterly meeting – Mary Anito and Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon in the State House race, Nick Duda and Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda in the King County race. It’s at 7 pm Wednesday at The Kenney (7125 Fauntleroy Way SW); the agenda also includes updates on ongoing issues including public safety, preparedness, the park expansion, and the EV-charging station.

WEST SEATTLE HALLOWEEN: ‘The Last Resort Hotel’

Less than two weeks until Halloween, and we are continuing to highlight decorations. Tonight, Lacey tells us her “Last Resort Hotel” has arrived for the season:

We have our Halloween haunt all set up again this year! Lots of things to see by day, and spookier to see at night – we are The Last Resort Hotel. Located just off Roxbury, 9643 18th Ave SW. (If you love the Grinch, you might also know us as Whoville at Christmas!)

Just like last year, we will have the yard open again for trick-or-treating and are also accepting donations for WC Food Bank! We have a full yard walk-through display that will only be open for a few nights. October 30 & 31, 5 pm- 9ish. If the weather is nice, I will also have it open on Saturday, October 24, and I will let the Blog know if I do! That said, there are many decorations to view outside of the yard leading up to Halloween, like The Last Resort Cemetery, where the Gravedigger is keeping an eye on things!

We are welcoming donations for WC Food Bank again and will have a QR code posted and a donation bin available. I will also put a donation bin out in front of my display in the next few days, if people would like to donate unopened food items – look for a black cooler labeled Donations. I will check it regularly.

We have a full yard walk-through display, with lots of hotel “amenities”, like the Witch Way Cafe, Last Gasp Gifts and Doll Parts Daycare. The hotel boasts a cemetery and morgue. Last Resort Coven meetings are currently being held in the witches’ den. Zombies will be there to greet you along the way!

Our theme is very fun! I’m a kid of the ’80s and I would say my display is inspired by old Scooby-Doo episodes, vintage Halloween etc. I love decorating and a lot of the display is handmade by myself, like all of the cemetery fencing, my huge pumpkin king, the mausoleum and spooky well. I have lots of fun with the signage too, it helps to tell the story!

Please come visit us and donate if you can! I have a few regular fans who come visit the display, which I love! I’ve offered a sneak peek to some, so if you see me out in the yard, say hi! I love how much joy it brings people, it inspires me to keep going!

Got – or seen – decorations that others should see too? Photos/tips welcome at westseattleblog@gmail.com or texted to 206-293-6302 – thank you!

BIZNOTE FOLLOWUP: Mashiko’s message on eve of West Seattle closure

After more than 30 years, Mashiko‘s final night in the West Seattle Junction is tomorrow. After that, the Japanese restaurant will be closed until it’s ready to reopen at its new location in White Center. The Mashiko team asked if we’d share their “farewell, West Seattle” message:

To all the amazing people of West Seattle- We want to say goodbye, sort of.

Mariah, our sushi chef and fearless leader has been exclusively working at Mashiko going on 27 years. She has watched West Seattle grow up from her little window on California Ave longer than any of us and was reflecting, “We’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of so many people’s lives. Watching families start and celebrate life has made our careers truly rewarding.” We couldn’t have said it better.

With our relocation we hope to bring the community together and grow our family and friends. If we could have stayed in West Seattle we would have. The White Center community is a growing, vibrant, diverse place truly welcoming of all people and quite a few of us call this community home. Our staff, friends and family will be working hard to build a warm and inviting space to recreate the Mashiko experience; Mashiko Tsugu- ‘to join’. The new location will allow us to grow and create more delicious food.

For now please follow us on our social media accounts if you’re interested in updates on our next chapter.

With love and excitement,
Mariah Kmitta, Alix Yarrow and the outstanding team at Mashiko Tsugu

It’s been almost three months since Mashiko announced the moving plan, a little over one month since disclosing the new location at 9640 16th SW. When will they reopen? Owner/GM Alix told WSB, “We would love to be open by the end of the year, but that’s dependant on how fast permitting moves.”

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Fauntleroy Fall Festival 2026, with new places to explore

(WSB photos)

1:26 PM: If you’ve been to the Fauntleroy Fall Festival in past years, you’ll notice the Fauntleroy Church lot looks different from past years. It’s a new layout because this year it’s all on the church/Y side – and some of what you’ll remember from inside The Hall at Fauntleroy is happening in the church’s Fellowship Hall – right now, participants in the Cake Trot get a chance to win decorated donated cakes:

Back out in the lot, look for the Fauntleroy Community Association’s Great Pumpkin Search booth – this year it’s part of the festival:

Lots more happening and we have more photos to add – see the schedule on the festival website – it’s on until 4 pm at 9140 California SW.

2:09 PM: The festival classics are going full force, like birdhouse-building and pumpkin-painting:

Volunteers like Deb are on hand to joyfully assist you:

And you can again this year get up-close views of birds and bunnies:

Performances are both outdoors and indoors (here again are the schedule and map) – the West Seattle Big Band is playing inside the Fellowship Hall. More coverage to come!

3:27 PM: The Big Band is playing all the way until the festival ends at 4 pm, so if yu’re here, don’t miss them.

Outside, another sizable band – the West Seattle Ukulele Players (video later).

And if someone in your family is still in the mood for pumpkin searching, the FCA says there’s still time – get to their table and get the info! They hid more than 400 and don’t know how many have been found yet, but certainly not all of them. We went to see some of the painted pumpkins, too:

This is all free thanks to donations and volunteering – if you didn’t donate while festival-going, you can find the link on the festival website.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Duwamish Alive! volunteers spend a day showing how Seattle’s only river connects us all

Photos by Torin Record-Sand
Video by Tracy Record
for West Seattle Blog

From West Seattle to Tukwila, hundreds of volunteers devoted Saturday to restoration and cleanup work along Seattle’s only river and in its watershed, no doubt appreciated by all those who depend on it, like the Great Blue Heron in our photo above. The fall session of the twice-yearly Duwamish Alive! multi-site work party included the volunteers we saw in parks near the mouth of the Duwamish River …

And those who gathered for the welcoming ceremony at White Center Heights Park:

While a collection of native plants awaited shovels to place them into their new homes, light rain fell.

But spirits remained bright through a short round of speeches – Sharon Leishman, who leads the Duwamish Alive! Coalition, explained its 20 years of work, and how the river and its watershed connects us all:

She introduced King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, who was also there to spotlight a new countywide celebration of volunteer service:

His participation reminded all present that the work is for future generations too – he brought along his daughter Jazzy:

Some of the riverfront parks with Duwamish Alive! events are part of the Port of Seattle, whose Commissioner Hamdi Mohamed spoke at White Center Heights Park as well, talking about the importance of governments responsibly stewarding the environment:

That theme was echoed by county Natural Resources and Parks deputy director Tricia Davis:

Before everyone dug into the tasks at hand, Leishman presented the speakers with copies of Tom Reese‘s book “Once and Future River: Reclaiming the Duwamish“:

And before everyone dispersed, the commemorative group photo:

Watch for your chance to volunteer when next spring’s Duwamish Alive! date is announced – and in the meantime, at many other events at local parks and forests, spotlighted on calendars like ours and the Green Seattle Partnership.

FOOTBALL: Chief Sealth IHS drops tight game to Bishop Blanchet

Story by Jason Grotelueschen
Photos courtesy of Tia Nguyen

Chief Sealth International High School‘s football squad fought hard against Bishop Blanchet on Saturday, falling just short with a final score of 21-14. The game was a noon kickoff at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex.

We were only able to attend in-person for the 1st quarter, which ended scoreless at 0-0. Sealth athletic director Ernest “Coach P.” Policarpio tells us that QB Michael Wayman scored on a TD run in the 2nd quarter, and the game was tied 7-7 at the half. Xander Gomez added a TD for the Seahawks in the 3rd quarter, hauling in a pass from Wayman, but Bishop Blanchet scored twice in the 2nd half to seal the victory for the Bears.

Game photos below, courtesy of Sealth parent Tia Nguyen:

Jeampy Kamili leaps for an interception:

Xander Gomez hauls in a pass for a touchdown:

The Seahawks remain winless for the season, and play O’Dea next Friday, October 23 at 7 pm at SWAC.

UPDATE: Harbor Avenue collision involving driver, bicyclist (updated)

7:44 PM: Officers told dispatch they’re reopening the street. We are checking with SFD about the rider’s condition. The online log suggests they’re being taken to the hospital by SFD medic unit.

5:33 AM: Just got word from SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo: “Crews responded to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist. They treated a 17-year-old male who was in stable condition. Paramedics transported him to Harborview for further care.”

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Fire Station 37 opens to visitors for Fire Safety Fair

(WSB photos by Torin Record-Sand)

How often do you get to look at Seattle Fire Department engines/trucks close up, and talk to firefighters in non-emergency circumstances? Here’s your chance – get over to Fire Station 37 before 2 pm!

The station at 35th SW and SW Holden is open for a Fire Safety Fair – and that means you get to see what’s based there, Engine 37 (above) and Ladder 13 (below):

Displays and activities inside, too:

All ages welcome:

Station 37 is one of four in West Seattle but it’s the only one open for this special event today!

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Demonstrators urge early voting

Though local advocates had suggested they planned to focus on bigger off-peninsula gatherings today, we just found demonstrations along California Avenue SW. The biggest is in The Junction, at multiple corners of Walk-All-Ways, with many of the sign-holders encouraging early voting, as advocates have been advising. (Added – They’re crossing with the lights; here’s a California/Alaska traffic-cam screenshot:)

We also saw a lone protester at California/Fauntleroy, and two three close to our HQ, holding signs by the “Do Not Enter” barricade at California/Thistle.

Candidate forum, tsunami preparedness and a leader stepping down @ Alki Community Council meeting

By Jason Grotelueschen
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

The Alki Community Council meeting on Thursday night at Alki UCC featured a robust candidate forum with six hopefuls for public office, as well as a tsunami-focused emergency-preparedness briefing, and a heartfelt farewell to the council’s leader.

Thursday night was the last official meeting for ACC president Charlotte Starck, who was gifted with flowers and treats from fellow board members to mark the occasion; she said she’ll continue to support and advise the council as needed.

Starck thanked her fellow board members and past and current volunteers, and touted the organization’s accomplishments and its strength going forward. Elections for additional board members are planned next month.

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Colorful end to a summer-like Friday

Thanks to JayDee (above) and Ryan (below) for photos from the pink sunset that ended our unseasonably warm Friday.

How unseasonable was it? According to the National Weather Service’s Daily Climate Summary, the 77-degree high was 17 degrees above the normal 60-degree high for this date. The morning low, though – 46 – had actually been one degree below normal. And for one more datapoint, that 77-degree high wasn’t anywhere close to a record – the NWS reminds us it was 88 degrees on October 16, 2022.

VIDEO: West Seattle band Sulk’s album-release show at Easy Street Records

As featured in our Friday highlight list, West Seattle band Sulk took the stage at Easy Street tonight for a show celebrating the release of their album “In the Shadows.” West Seattle journalist/writer/historian Clay Eals was there and recorded the first three songs by the trio, whose members are Carlynn Nelson, Peder Nelson, and Jasper McCann.

About the briefly big SFD response in Admiral

Another one of those “looks bad on the SFD Real-Time 911 page but was downsized almost immediately” calls this past hour at an apartment near Admiral Safeway. Initial dispatch was “fire in building,” quickly downsized to “automatic fire alarm” – SFD says a dryer fire set off the sprinklers. Only one unit is still at the scene.

ELECTION 2026: King County now has 100 ballot drop boxes. Here’s how to find yours

Ballots are arriving and general-election voting has begun. Today King County Executive Girmay Zahilay and Elections Director Julie Wise joined other officials in celebrating the county’s 100th ballot drop box. It’s in Shoreline, but the milestone is a reason to remind you how to find your nearest drop box. Our area has boxes in The Junction, Morgan Junction, High Point, and Puget Ridge, plus White Center and South Park. They’re all mapped here, and they’re all now open 24 hours a day. You’re urged to vote as soon as you can, even though the deadline isn’t until November 3.

SIDE NOTE: And if you want the experience of voting with others, West Seattle Indivisible is organizing a “Bop to the Box” procession from St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church (3050 California SW) to the Junction box, 2 pm Sunday, October 25.
