I’m down near 65th and Stevens and the raccoons are frightening me and my pups! We were attacked as I prepared for our evening walk, right outside our front door! I think a family of them moved into a space under some stairs near my front door. Does anyone know if my landlord has a responsibility to have them relocated? Thank you!

Nope. There is no law that I know of that says it’s illegal to have wildlife in or around a residence. Also, wildlife like raccoons cannot be “relocated.” As has been discussed here before, if they are trapped – they have to be killed. What you might discuss with the landlord, if it’s not something you can do simply by yourself, is seeing about setting up some kind of barrier to keep them from getting into that space? Google “living with wildlife raccoons” for the State Dept. of Wildlife’s very helpful info – TR

I know you don’t live in Highland Park, but we are having a wildlife biologist from the USDA come talk about living among wildlife in the city at our next HPAC meeting- all are welcome if you want to come ask some questions or get some information- it’s at the Highland Park Improvement Club on 12th and Holden at 7pm on April 24th.

Racoons can be a nuisance but I love em anyway. Our neighborhood is full of them.

Just Saturday one of those critters raided our critter-proof trash can again and threw garbage everywhere. Smart rascals they are.

Now if only they could be taught to use a broom and dustpan to clean up the mess….

Is it illegal to shoot a raccoon within city limits?

I love’m, too, even though they’re crazy creatures and definitely not to be messed with. Problem with shooting them in-city (aside from whatever the law may be) is it takes more than a pellet gun, and that doesn’t seem cool in-city.

Call John at Adept Pest Control to help with your raccoon problem. He will make sure they find somewhere else to take up residence.

I’ve encountered some pretty fearless raccoons around West Seattle. A couple years ago I was out along Harbor Drive at 3am photographing meteor showers and a pack of them came up to me and were actually growling at me. They were vicious.

Thank you for all the information! I definitely don’t want to shoot them, but I don’t want them to bite me or my dogs either. I really wish they would just act like the raccoons from ‘Over the Hedge’! Then we could all hang out together :-)

Raccoons are NOT “mean”, people are MEAN.

Raccoons are a wild animal, they are trying to live/survive with us. They can attack, but it is not like they “want” to do it on purpose, they may be protecting their babies, just like a human would. Their teeth are sharp for a reason and that is to eat not attack people.

As for Adpet pest control or any pest type of company, finding a different place to take up “residence”, not quite sure what that might mean, but if it is what I thinking it is not legal. I know the companies are NOT taking them to Sarvey or Paws.

FYI the raccoons that live with me and my cats do just fine and have NO issues. I do/try to work with mother nature.

Agree with hammerhead-I have also seen cats and raccoons eat side by side. As long as neither is aggressive toward the other, all is fine. My guess is that the raccoons mentioned in the original post are protecting young. It is spring when baby creatures are born. As the WSB editors mentioned, if raccoons are trapped by a pest control co., they have to be killed. Maybe John at Adept flushes them out of their homes and makes reentry impossible? I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing this now and possibly separating young from mothers.

I don’t know… Racoons can be very mean. While camping a few years ago, a racoon was going crazy after my dog. So, we moved into the car, where it proceeded to try to get in to attack the dog though a “cracked” window. I am sorry, but racoons can be crazy mean.

If they are crazy mean they may have distemper which would explain aggressive actions, usually they back down or shelter when confronted in my experience.

Raccoon traps fit perfectly into water-filled garbage cans.

    Just so you know…….

Like mehud7 said I’ve tripped over some raccoons eating out of my cat’s food dish with my cat eating at the same time down at Alki about 27 years ago. I was carrying my baby in my arms out the front door in the dark and tripped over a raccoon and almost dropped my little one. I landed on my elbows and knees and the raccoon didn’t seem to even notice. The ones in my yard now just walk by me while I’m lying on my lounge chair in the backyard and ignore me. They do mess up my cherry trees when there’s fruit on them. I would never corner one and don’t harass them so all’s good.
