kennemMember1. Bringing the troops home from Iraq – a country that never attacked us, never threatened to attack us, and couldn’t have attacked us even if it had wanted to.
2. Issuing an executive order to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, putting an end to Don’t Ask Don’t Lie. With a stroke of his pen, Harry S. Truman opened the armed services to black soldiers, now it’s time to improve the strength of our military by doing the same for gay ones.
3. Getting a clue about the difference between religious marriage and legal marriage. Obama has stated repeatedly that he thinks same-sex couples should not be allowed to marry – because of his religious beliefs. Has he ever heard of separation of church and state? The discussion is about legal marriage by the state, not about religious marriage. Legal marriage is a protected civil right – for straight people. Gays and lesbians are Americans too and deserve the same civil rights as their fellow straight citizens.
4. Using the power of the Executive Office to divulge to the American people the unpatriotic, unconstitutional acts and the lies of the Bush/Cheney administration of the last 8 years: the “Patriot Act”, the unjust war on Iraq, Abu Ghraib, directing scientists at the EPA what to write, illegal wiretapping of American citizens, and extraordinary rendition of prisoners to other countries in violation of the fundamental legal principle of habeas corpus.
These things Obama could do in his first 100 days and it would leave us with a stronger, fairer, more American America.

JanSParticipantgood ideas. I’ve had this thing running around in my head for days now re: corruption in the military, in awarding civilian contracts to Iraq, in the CIA, Dept. of Defense, Feds, etc, etc., etc. I wonder how many people in these “organizations” are quietly trying to destroy evidence, or quaking in their boots because the new admin. won’t tolerate some things. I do hope he cleans these up…we’ll all be the better for it.

charlabobParticipantThe people who ran the disastrous Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq have been put in charge of much of the distribution of the 7 Billion Dollar bailout. Having proved their ineptness, it’s no wonder they’d be rehired. I would like to see them removed Day One–and an investigation begun of why they were given the job.

JanSParticipantCharla…I totally agree… just remember who made that decision. I doubt that he would recognize inept if it hit him upside his face…

JoBParticipantkennem…
it’s obvious you gave this some thought.
good suggestions…
i would like to add…
rescinding authorization for federal troops to be deployed in America.
Firing Blackwater and other private security forces and using the savings to raise the pay for the armed forces to attract more applicants.
Taking FEMA out of Homeland Security, restoring it’s autonomy and offering recruiting bonuses to bring many of the career disaster management specialists who left the agency back.
this is fun.

longtimelurkerMemberI’d like to see the following:
The Gov’t should offer to buy any private vehicle over 5 years old that is rated at less than 25MPG at full Blue Book value and then offer a Gov’t guaranteed low/no interst loan to buy a new American built car. This will have a huge impact on oil consumption and it will save American jobs.
A Win-win

ellenaterMemberThanks, JoB. Great article. Very compelling ideas everywhere! I’m still reeling and expect to have to return to Kansas at any moment, lol.
One of the comments was for election reform. I really like that. I think economy and restoring the Constitution immediately are my top two.
There’s SO many. How can we choose? I’ve been so hopeless in the area of leadership for so long it’s just crazy…
Bodes well that he is taking the transparency thing seriously. We can hold him much more accountable this way and people will be much more involved and aware in general.
Somebody pinch me…

JoBParticipantlongtimelurker..
i am afraid that will only work when the cars available beat the 25mpg of those already on the road…
i was feeling bad about my minivan… it only gets 19-23 MPG.. but when i looked to replace it i found that most automatics didn’t do so much better(
what’s a little old lady with arthritic hands and a bad back to do?
when they build it.. i will be first in line to buy it.

RainyDay1235MemberI really hope part of the ECONOMY-first focus is a line-by-line accountability of government spending. I want to see a complete transparency listed at:
Ex: All AIG bonus and vacation packages put on hold. Those who took part in post-bailout luxury spending routinely fired.
Ex: Retirement package for Ex-Congressman reduced to $X
Ex: Private Towncar service cut to all members of $X.
….etc.

B-squaredParticipantGood suggestions – i agree with many of them (as well as the ones mentioned above).
I would like to see the federal agencies (EPA, FCC, FDA, SEC, etc) that have been compromised in the last eight years revived by clearing the hen houses of all the foxes. End the cronyism and put competent and ethical folks in the leadership positions.
I also think we need a Climate Czar, since climate change is now considered a threat to national security. Get some fact-based science into the administration instead of the fuzzy-science that the Bush administration promoted.

JanSParticipantI just saw that Barack Obama is going to review Bush’d Executive Orders. Seems that he’s really goingto dig into what’s been happening with that, and fix what he can.I like the hands on approach that he’s taking.
November 10, 2008 at 6:53 pm #646918
JoBParticipantlongtiemlurker…
i have to apologize for my middle of the night post.
of course they build the car i want… i just can’t afford it.
but i would feel better about a bonus for buying american cars if more of them both exceeded mileage expectations and met needs.
it’s obvious they have been able to do that for some time… the new trucks ford has put out prove the technology was available and relatively easy to implement.

AnonymousInactiveWhatever he does in the first days, he will definitely be under close scrutiny.
I hope that he is active and productive (so far, it’s looking good :)).
