livingonthebeachMemberI for one am very blessed in my life right now. Things aren’t great, but could be worse. I have recently been thinking more and more about how I can help others, whether it’s money, labor or time.
I prefer to give closer to home and am looking for a resource that has local WS groups in need. I am particularly interested in children/teen, pets or veterans. Any suggestions?

datamuseParticipantI don’t know offhand of a resource that lists groups in need, though I can look for one if WSB doesn’t have one handy. Idealist.org might be one place to look.
I do know, though, that in addition to doing ecological restoration work, Nature Consortium has youth art programs. They’re a great organization I’ve volunteered for in the past (and mean to do so again as soon as I can find the time).
WSB: Maybe in addition to a jobs section of the forum, there can be a place for WSB-based nonprofits and others to post calls for volunteers?

The Velvet BulldogParticipantlotb: You are awesome. There’s LOTS of need unfortunately and you will be inundated with offers! A couple of options right off the top of my head:
Westside Baby: westsidebaby.org
West Seattle Help Line (who could probably also direct you to other organizations that fit your interests) westseattlehelpline.org
West Seattle Food Bank: westseattlefoodbank.org
White Center Food Bank: whitecenterfoodbank.org
Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (they do lots of classes for kids they might need help with) youngstownarts.org
Also, schools typically need tutors, and churches are usually involved with a number of organizations so they would be good resources for you.
Thank you for making yourself available to our great community and good luck in finding something you can be passionate about!

inactiveMemberAt risk of pointing out what may already be obvious to you, WSB publishes all of this stuff and more everyday under the “How to Help” category.
If you scroll down the right-side banner, in blue letters are the categories alphabetically listed. Click on “How to Help”.
Happy Holidays folks!

WSBKeymasterI am compiling a list to make its own page on this site as soon as I can finish it. All suggestions in the meantime really helps. And thank you to everyone who helped tonight at WestSide Baby – I am at The Kenney’s meeting, Patrick’s at the school meeting, so we couldn’t go check on the W-Side Baby sorting event, but we just got a message that TWENTY PEOPLE SHOWED UP AND ALMOST ALL HEARD FROM WSB .. thank you all SO much for answering the call. I know many are serving West Seattle in so many other ways too and we are thrilled that this site is used to connect people who can help with people who need help … we want to do a better job of that.

WSBKeymasterAnd thanks WSD for pointing out the categories. That list will be higher in a future design … but for now, you can scroll down and check archived categories in 90-plus content areas like “how to help.”

livingonthebeachMemberThank you all. I swear I looked on WSB for a compilation but couldn’t find anything. Although the “How to Help” is a nice recap of articles, I was looking for something more like a bulletin board or classified listing.
Your suggestions are a great first step for me. I can’t wait to get started.
Happy Holidays!!

RainyDay1235MemberHigh Point Tutoring Center could use more tutors in January. We’ve had to start doubling up students and when you only have them for an hour at a time that really cuts down on the homework help we can provide…great program, check it out!
